When – 12 February
Where – Sennen Cove to Morvah
Distance – 11 / 12 miles
Home for the night – The Old Chapel backpackers, Zennor
I’ll start this entry with a confession: originally, I’d intended to walk all the way to Zennor today. Then I realised that it probably wasn’t going to be possible to make it in the light (remember folks, it’s early February and it’s bloody hilly), so the last five miles of our walk was done by taxi: a ‘most relaxing’ way to travel and much easier on the feet.
Luckily I’m fully reconciled to coming back to this part of Cornwall, because the Tinner’s Arms pub (a freehouse) in Zennor does, it turns out, the most mouthwateringly delicious food and a number of nice ales – including one called Tinners which went down very well. In fact, as I lie in bed typing this my stomach is groaning from the vast amounts of food I’ve eaten tonight!
This has been a second good day. It hasn’t rained, it wasn’t windy, and the views have been spectacular. We’ve met lots of friendly dogs, who have, for the most part (man with the gun yesterday aside…) been equally friendly. Not that we’ve seen that many people…
This part of the world is full to bursting with beautiful beaches (Whitesand Bay and Porteras Cove), old tin mines (and the warning signage accompanying them) and hills. Although not as many as yesterday and not, by the sounds of things, as many as tomorrow!
Best things today were beautiful Cape Cornwall, which is so much more dignified than its sister, Lands End, just down the coast, and the Pendeen Watch lighthouse. Oh, and my hostel – which is lovely and really deserves to have more than just me staying in it. And the cafe in Morvah, which couldn’t have come at a better time. And the pub, which, as I’ve already indicated, I rather liked!
